                        M. Kate Murphy - Olive Harriet Smythe

                        Picture
Kate’s passion for theater started in the 8th grade at St Joseph’s School in Fort Atkinson Wi when she was cast as the witch in Hansel and Gretel. Kate joined the Masque and Gavel Club at Fort High and won the Outstanding Actress Award as a senior for her role as Buttercup in HMS Pinafore.  At Marquette University, Kate majored in Speech and Theater, and landed a job as a junior high speech teacher and advisor to the Drama Club in Algonquin Il in 1966.

Eventually Kate earned a Master’s Degree in Counseling at MSU and assumed a student affairs position at West Shore Community College in Scottville Mi in 1970 where she acted and directed in numerous productions at the college and at the Ramsdell Theater in Manistee.

Kate returned to graduate school and an Assistant Director position at MSU in 1976 and theater took a back seat for a number of years though she did appear in a production at the old Okemos Barn Theater and at Lansing Community College.

Upon her retirement from MSU Kate taught at Davenport College, Washtenaw Community College, and Lansing Community College, and was once again infected by the theater bug.  She appeared in the Ann Arbor Civic Theater production of The Music Man and directed a children’s production for AA2T. Kate discovered the Pinckney Players in 2010 and appeared in My Fair Lady.

Kate is happy to be in another show directed by Brad Rondeau. In addition to theater Kate enjoys volunteering at the Humane Society of Huron Valley, ushering for UMS, playing bridge, spending time with her great nephew Kalin, writing, attending MSU basketball games, watching the Green Bay Packers, and going to a warm place to snorkel during our Michigan winter. Kate lives in Pinckey with her partner Katy, dogs Gracie and Billie, and Cockatiel Junior.
